Research Interests

My research program is dedicated to developing practical, economically viable management of the soybean cyst nematode (SCN), Heterodera glycines.  In cooperation with Dr. Richard Bernard, retired ARS soybean breeder, and Dr. Cecil Nickell, retired UI soybean breeder, we developed 21 cultivars and germplam lines resistant to SCN.  I am involved with integrated pest management.  I study biological control of SCN with the bacterium Pasteuria nishizawae, an obligate parasite of SCN.  Pasteuria nishizawae was effective in controlling SCN in microplots, and recently was effective in large scale field studies. Other ongoing research is the study of a bacterium I recently described (‘Candidatus Paenicardinium endoi’) and it’s potential as a biological control agent of SCN.  Other studies involve the evaluation of perennial soybean for resistance to SCN, determining cropping systems to maximize control of SCN, developing molecular markers for virulence of SCN, and studying the genetic diversity of SCN.
