Mary's quick and easy Configuring Automatic Updating instructions

If you don't use the automatically installing and configuring version of the McAfee VirusScan installer for UIUC or you are installing VShield on a server, you will need to manually configure the automatic updating features of VirusScan. To Start, you want to look for an icon in your system tray (bottom right corner next to the clock) that looks like a small magnifying glass. (It will popup "McAffee VirusScan Scheduler" if you hold the mouse over it for a moment.). For VShield, there is only a single icon, the big red V from which you can right click and choose the Console option.

Right click on the icon, and choose "Restore" to bring up the Scheduler window. At this point, you can run any of the procedures listed, usually the Update or Upgrade by highlighting either one and then clicking "Start" on the menu bar above. A window will pop up telling you that the update or upgrade is proceeding.

To configure Autoupdate (or upgrade), double click on the Auto Update item (should be next to last) to bring up the Auto update window. Choose the "configure" button toward the bottom. (You only have to do this the first time to get everything set up.)

You will probably see the McAffee site listed for the updates. You don't want to use this site, as it will be a lot slower than using the campus site. So, Choose the Add button to insert an additional site.

In the window that pops up, enter the following: (text in red is what appears on the screen, text in blue is what you type) Site Name: (anything you want - I use CITES - formerly known as CCSO - Update Site)

Click the little box - Enabled Select a Transfer Method: "FTP from a remote network computer"

Enter an FTP computer name and directory: (Make sure you type this exactly, or cut and paste, the following): uiarchive.cso.uiuc.edu/licensed/vir

Click the little box - Use anonymous FTP login

Click OK -- You'll be put back into the Automatic Update window.

Click OK to return to the original "Task Properties" window.

You should also check the schedule and set the updating to "Daily". Choose the schedule tab, and select "Daily", and choose a time that you know your machine will be on. Click OK to exit.

That completes the setup. Whenever you want to run a manual update, open the Scheduler window, double click on the Auto Update, and then choose the "Run Now" button. You can even do this over a modem from home or on the road though this may take a while, since it is being done over a modem. Remember, you have to be dialed in before running this from home.

Updating may sometimes require a reboot, so make sure you don't have anything running that you may lose in a reboot. (It should ask if you want to reboot, but I always like to have everything closed just in case...)

By the way, all of these instructions work for Upgrading your virusscan engine if you choose the Auto Upgrade entry instead. The ftp site is slightly different: uiarchive.cso.uiuc.edu/licensed/vir/upgrade

And you should set the schedule for Upgrades to "Weekly" at some convenient time. Upgrades affect the virus scan engine.

You can also find a preconfigured scanning option to set up regular virus scanning of your computer.

Instructions for fixing VirusScan scheduling

If you have VirusScan scheduling set up properly but it is not updating properly, open the scheduler by double clicking the scheduler icon in the taskbar at the lower right of your computer screen. The VirusScan icon is the magnifying glass with a little red circled clock above it.

Look at the "AutoUpdate" line which will show the date last run and the date it is supposed to run again. If the date it is supposed to run again is less than the last run, problems may develop. First, Click the "Schedule" tab and make sure that the "Enable" box is checked. You must open this window to start the fix.

Then, choose the Autoupdate tab, and then choose "Run Now" at the lower right. If all goes correctly, you should get a screen saying "AutoUpdate is updating your ..." and when finished, will ask if you want to reboot. Answer yes if all programs are closed, answer no if something you've got running needs to be ended (and then do a restart).
