W121 Podium Instructions

The computer podium in W121 Turner Hall is equipped with a Pentium IV level computer running Windows XP (with zip disk and cd reader), an Elmo overhead projector, and a VCR. Each component is connected to an LCD projector that displays onto the board or screen at the front of the room. Using the LCD remote, push On to turn on the projector while pointing at the projector. Additional directions on using the remote control are below. The computer has the usual Internet software and the Microsoft Office suite and most of the software used in the computer lab, N120 Turner Hall. If additional software is needed, see Charlie Smyth or staff members in M103 Turner Hall (csmyth@illinois.edu). Please turn off the projector and other equipment when finished.

PODIUM: The podium should not be moved. Please leave it as is and don't try to push it around as you will end up breaking cables. There is a separate internet connection (10BaseT or RJ45) and a monitor connection for a laptop that can be placed on top of the podium. This uses the "Computer 2" selection from the push button menu on the LCD remote control.

LIGHTS: There are two sets of four light banks with separate controls for each bank. The overhead fluorescent lights have 4 switches at the main door or on the wall behind the podium. For most overhead presentations you will want to turn some of these off and just use the "Can" lights that are controlled from the 5 push button switches on the wall by the podium. You will want to adjust the brightness as needed. The projector is bright enough to be seen clearly with the two outside fluorescent banks left on.

REMOTE CONTROL:LCD projector is left on in standby mode all the time (red light). The On/Off switch on the remote control will turn it on. Pushing twice will turn it back off, sending it into standby mode. Once into the shutdown cycle, it takes about several minutes to come back up to standby so don't do this unless you really want to shut down. The remainder of the buttons on the remote control are exactly as labeled. Focus and zoom can only be done on the projector itself – no remote control. The remote includes a built in laser pointer though the mouse and dvd functions are not connected at this time. There are individual buttons for switching to Video 1, Video 2, Computer 1, and Computer 2. The Video 1 setting is needed for using the VCR or the Elmo unit. The Computer 2 selection is for a laptop or other computer hooked up through the 2nd set of wiring.

VCR/ELMO: To use the VCR or Elmo overhead projector, turn on the Front Panel selection box which has choices for Elmo/VCR on it. This box is mounted below, right on the podium next to a volume control knob. The only buttons you are concerned with are the Elm(o) and the VCR though it is possible to connect an additional S-Video device on port 2 using the guest S-Video cable. Power on the VCR and/or the Elmo as needed. The Elmo unit has a power switch on the base end of the left side. You have your choice of top lights for projecting an object laid on the surface or bottom lights for traditional transparencies. Note that this is a great piece of equipment for displaying just about anything you want, particularly images from books. It has zoom controls and so on.

Computer: To use the computer, turn on it's power and the monitor will also need to be started if not already on. The logon and password are automatic. You can map to network resources from Windows Explorer as needed.

Laptops: To hook up a portable computer to the projector, plug the grey SVGA cable into the VGA port of the portable computer. Likewise, an Internet connection can be set up by plugging into the network using the rj45 cable that is tied to the vga cable. Any currently active computer on the Crop Sciences VLAN will work. If a guest machine wants to hook up to the Internet in the building using TCP/IP, they can use this ip number: 130.126.89.33 with hostname = guestw121.cropsci.uiuc.edu. The various other information they will need to do this includes: subnet mask 255.255.252.0; the gateway is 130.126.88.1; DNS is 128.174.5.58 and 128.174.5.102. Using DHCP will NOT work unless the machine has been checked over and added to the system by staff in M103 Turner.
