Web Services Provided in the Department
The department provides the following services at no charge to all departmental staff:
- Employee Directory pages on the main departmental website
- Class pages on the main departmental website (if you want bulleting boards or other interactive features, you will need to use the campus resources, see below)
- Event listings on the main departmental website
- Project planning and consulting
Please note that all pages on the departmental website must conform to the site's visual style ("look and feel") and must have the site's menus, headers and footers for site continuity. Also, employees can request an account to maintain their own pages or have a member of the web team create and update their pages.
The following services are provided on a cost recovery basis:
Web hosting
If the departmental pages mentioned above are too restricting, the department can house your project/research website on the departmental web server for an annual fee of $150. Additionally, a one-time fee of $90 is charged to create and setup the site. This includes registering the site name, creating the account, and setting up the software for generating site statistics. The annual fee is charged in the first quarter of each year and will be prorated in the first year based on when the site is created. The department currently does not provide e-mail services for websites.
Information about our web server. The department web server is a Dell server running with the RedHat Linux operating system and Apache web server. The system has separate operating system and data drives with RAID 1/RAID 5 for maximum file protection. Site data is backed up daily.
Web Page/Site Design and Development
The department's web team can help you design and create your site. Design and Development services are charged at an hourly rate, based on who is assigned for the work. Current charges are $30/hour for the webmaster's time and $15/hour for a student's time. Most sites will have at least 3 hours at the higher rate before the site is handed over to a student to complete the work. For extensive projects, we will need a commitment for a certain amount so that we can hire additional students help to complete the project.
Database Development
The department has invested in a ColdFusion server for web-to-database projects. If you have a web/database project that you would like to implement, the web team can help you develop it. This service is charged at an hourly rate of $30/hour. Please remember that database work takes a lot of back-end design and programming before anything is "visible", so plan your projects accordingly. The webmaster can consult with you and give you a tentative time estimate on how many hours the project will take.
Photography
The web team can help take digital images for your website, and can optimize your digital images for use on the web. The hourly rate for these services is $20/hour. (Please note that our digital camera does not have the ability to take microscopic images or specialty shots.)
Other Resources on Campus
Video Production
The College of ACES has the equipment and staff for creating videos for both tape and internet access. Fees for this and other ACES services can be found on the ITCS website at http://www.aces.uiuc.edu/itcs/charges/index.html.
CD Burning/Duplication
The College of ACES offers mass production CD duplication if you provide them with a master copy. Your artwork is printed with 1200dpi directly on the face of the CD. (They can also help you design the artwork if needed.) With provided artwork, the cost is $2.25 per CD (in a jewel case). For more information, contact John Tubbs (tubbs@illinois.edu, 244-0346.) [Note: If you want a CD with a web-based interface, the department web team can help you design/create the master CD, at the same rates as website design/development.]
Non-Linux websites
For those who have developed websites on a Windows-based web server, there is often Microsoft-specific code which requires that the pages run on a Windows server and therefore cannot run on the department's server. The College of ACES does provide web hosting services on a number of different platforms. Fees for this service can be found on the ITCS website at http://www.aces.uiuc.edu/itcs/charges/web_hosting.html.
Interactive Class Websites
The campus provides resources and training for those instructors who wish to incorporate instructional technology into their classes. These services are provided through the CITES Educational Technologies section. Information about these services can be found at their website at http://www.cites.uiuc.edu/edtech. For the most part, these services are a free resource to encourage instructors to use the technology.
Domain name registration
The department provides free domain names within its domain space (cropsci.uiuc.edu) for use with websites. (For example, vt.cropsci.uiuc.edu, agronomyday.cropsci.uiuc.edu, etc.) Please speak with the webmaster when choosing your name so that she can check to make sure it isn't already being used.
If you wish to have a more universal name, the following services are provided through CITES:
- Customer-specific domain names (under uiuc.edu and uillinois.edu, for example ipm.uiuc.edu or sweetcorn.uiuc.edu.) No installation fee will be charged at the time of the domain's creation; twice a year, in January and July, a fee of $5 will appear on your phone bill. More information about this service can be found at: https://www-dns.cites.uiuc.edu/dnstools/DomainReq/customerspecific-uiuc.html. This service must be arranged through department technical personnel, but the department does not charge anything additional to set this up.
- Personalized domains. Non-UIUC domains may also be registered through CITES (for example, a .org name for a multi-university project.) The fees for a non-.edu domain have been reduced. There will be a $50 installation fee due at the time of the domain's creation, and the first year's fee of $15 is due at the same time. After that, once a year in July, a fee of $15 will appear on your phone bill. There are rules governing these site names and how they can be used. More information about this service can be found at https://www-dns.cites.uiuc.edu/dnstools/DomainReq/personalized-other.html. This service must be arranged through department technical personnel, but the department does not charge anything additional to set this up.
