Career Opportunities in Crop Sciences

Graduates of the Department of Crop Sciences enter a wide range of careers, finding opportunities in business, government, and educational and research institutions. Some students are employed in public service positions that address environmental regulation, resource conservation and land use planning. Others provide leadership in farm management as agricultural consultants or by marketing seeds, plant nutrients and integrated pest management products. Still others conduct research or go abroad to serve as agricultural advisors. Many students continue their education, pursuing advanced degrees in Crop Sciences or other professions.

The average starting salary of May 2006 graduates of the Department of Crop Sciences was about $42,300, the highest average in the College of ACES.

Master's, Ph.D., and postdoctoral researchers from our department find employment in academic, governmental, industrial, and international settings. Many successful scientific careers have been launched directly from our faculty laboratories. Close ties are maintained with a number of seed, herbicide, fertilizer, and biotechnology companies. Scientists educated at the University of Illinois can be found throughout the commercial companies related to the disciplines studied by crop scientists.
